Wave:Space Provides Design of New Digital Editing Suite for Camrac Creative Center
Acoustic design firm also provide specifications for speaker system and hardware
Foothill Ranch, August 28, 1996: Wave:Space, Inc., one of the world’s leading design and engineering firms of recording, video, motion picture and broadcast facilities, directed by acclaimed acoustic designer Carl Yanchar, recently completed the design of a new digital audio editing suite for Camrac Creative Center of Reno, NV.
Jim Mitchell, producer for Camrac, commented on the problems of his existing room, "I knew what we were hearing was not really what was being recorded on tape. We were using EQ to change the color of the image inside the edit suite, when in reality, we were only compensating for bad room design and an inappropriate sound system. We were destroying the integrity of the field tracks just to make them sound right in the edit suite."
On his decision to hire Wave:Space, "We were told repeatedly by people who lived and breathed audio that a Carl Yanchar designed room would faithfully reproduce our field recorded tracks in a controlled environment. We expected good sound – but we were not prepared for how exceptional the final combination would actually become."
Wave:Space speced out Bag-End speaker systems powered by Haffler amps and using Bag End ELF cross-over networks. The speakers were symmetrically placed in four equi-distant positions around the room with an additional center channel to prepare for future DVD production. Each speaker was accompanied by a separate Bag End sub-woofer.
Mitchell, continues, "Several skeptics who clung to the invalid theory that low-frequency sound is non-directional, scoffed at the plan to position sub-woofers side by side with each speaker around the room. That argument was laid to rest during the later days of installation. We had hooked up the speakers and sub-woofers and were playing back a particular recording of a diesel locomotive that started from a standstill toward the camera. One of the carpenters who was refining the speaker mounts, accidentally disconnected the sub-woofer on the left front side. One of the engineers who had argued in vane for a single center sub-woofer said, ‘What happened to the great low frequency sound?’ We checked the amps, checked the wires and then found the disconnected lead to the Bag-End sub-woofer. We hooked it back up and the tremendous ‘left-side’ low frequency that ruffled your shirt against your chest came back like a thunder clap. Thereafter, there was no more argument about low -frequency directionality."
In addition to acoustic design, Wave:Space, also offers custom interface design and fabrication. Wave:Space also has developed a complete line of audio monitor systems, ranging from full-range, high powered main monitors to compact powered and un-powered near field monitors.
